DIGITAL LENSES DEMYSTIFIED

As an industry, we know digital lenses are not going away—it’s time for everyone to understand the technologies, and embrace them.  But there is confusion because there are so many new terms, and the illusion that “digital is better” – sometimes it is – but it’s dependent on many parameters. The following information is meant as a tool to help guide you through the various digital designs, and how they can impact your patients’ vision and life. For more detailed information on specific lens designs, contact your Homer Optical Sales Consultant.

TRADITIONAL progressives  are limited to one design and have been used successfully for years. The progressive design is on the front side of the lens, and the distance power is surfaced on the back side of the lens using traditional lathes and tools. Do these lenses work? Of course, just as listening to music through a single speaker system works, but with limited sound effects.

FULL BACK SIDE/DRx progressives are also limited to one design but the location of the design has changed. In this case, the progressive design is on the BACK side of the lens, and the distance power is digitally surfaced on the BACK side of the lens .This digital process eliminates rounding the Rx to a static tool and the need for an inventory of molded product.   The designer is therefore able to create a greater number of designs. If it’s a good lens design, the result will be better vision vs. traditional. Still one speaker (one side of the lens) with the addition of an equalizer—we can tweak the sound by changing treble, base, etc., but there is still only one speaker.

DUAL DIGITAL VISION (DDV) progressives have the progressive design on the front side of the lens, and an optimization of the design surfaced onto the back. An example of this technology is the Varilux 360 products, and is a prelude to the new DUAL OPTIX.

DUAL OPTIX progressives are digitally surfaced with design elements on both sides of the lens. The combination of these design elements creates a new design that would not otherwise be possible, because the designer can now create an unlimited number of effects.  Beyond just "tweaking" the levels of sound, our audio experience will benefit from effects not possible with a single speaker. For Visual Acuity and Audio Performance —TWO SIDES ARE BETTER THAN ONE.

DIFFERENTIATING DESIGNS

Now that we’ve defined the primary Digital Design Technologies, we’ll categorize today’s most popular progressives into 4 categories including what type of surfacing process is used to create the design.
